I’m gonna figure it all out…
About a month an a half ago I made a slight change in my career and took on the responsibility of managing a group of incredibly talented and creative people. I have been in a sales or sales management role for the last six years of my career, so to be back in the delivery saddle again is interesting to say the least. Adding to this interesting transition is that I am not nearly as creative as most of the people on my team.
The team is made up of a combination of Information Architects, Visual Designers, Site Developers, and Software Developers/Engineers. The personality make-up of the team is as varied as any group of people that I have been around in my career. It’s great. I am learning so much from them. More than they even realize. From cruising around on their Blogs and Sites to talking with them about their interests, what they’re reading, what I should be reading and just hanging out with them as much as I can; I’m just trying to be a sponge.
Tonight is a perfect example of my trying to be a sponge. I sat down and put flipped on Game 4 of the Mavs/Heat Finals Series, mostly as background noise as I am not that big a basketball fan. With plenty of background fodder, I started to search out blogging solutions for myself. Would I go with Wordpress? Would I go so far as a full fledged Textpattern-based site? Would I be lazy and go the Blogger route? I knew one thing. I wasn’t looking where I would have looked a year ago, some Microsoft based solution. You see, I want to understand the things that come as “old hat” to the the talented people that I work closely with now. I am always going to be a Microsoft guy. It’s sort of in my DNA, but I have learned a fair bit about other technologies over the course of the last few weeks. Microsoft is good for the mainstream, corporate user of today, but does Microsoft have the best solution in all cases…. NO!
So you are probably wondering how I landed at squarespace. I was checking out Jared Christensen’s site when I landed on his links page which took me to Jeremy Koempel’s site where I started reading and poking around at some links. On his page was a link to squarespace. I clicked it and started reading about what this site had to offer, and decided, what the hell, go for it! So I did and now I am here.
I hope to try to update this everyday about all sorts of things. Whether it be work related, family related, hobby related… I’m going to post about it. I’ve all but decided that I am eventually going to go the textpattern route, but for now, this will be the home for my blogging.
